from Rack to Real life(the J. Crew slub cotton-silk Melody dress)

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting real life images (with myself as the model!) so I'm thrilled that you're taking a peek :)
What I'm modeling is the J. Crew slub cotton-silk Melody dress which is currently available for sale at jcrew.com and also via the J. Crew catalog. I'm in love with it and envision wearing it on numerous occasions to numerous events both real and imagined. In real life, I've worn it to class with a blazer (I'm a grad student for only 3 more weeks!).

Real Life

****The lighting in the real life pic doesn't do justice to the vibrancy of the dress's color. The color is more vivid and for the most part true to the rack image. However, the dress is somewhat shorter than I anticipated (the specs quote that it falls 20.5" from the waist), but still an appropriate length. I was expecting it to be knee length, but on my 5'9" frame, the length of this dress falls in the no-man's land between mid-thigh length and knee-length. Works for me! I paired it with some gold peep toe flats that are from the Isaac Mizrahi for Target summer 2008 collection, I believe. I'm totally feelin' the citron/gold combo. Are you? Lavender's next!****

Real Life

****This is probably my favorite of the 3 colors the dress comes in (citron, sweet lavender, light pewter (not pictured)). Lavender to me has always represented femininity and sweetness, and is an exquisite color for spring-time! On the rack, this dress appears to be more of a lavender with bluish undertones, but the color is actually more similar to that of in the real life image, with pinker undertones. I plan on wearing this dress to lunch with girlfriends, church services, and whenever else the mood strikes. However, I hope to wear it someday to all of the more vacation-oriented locales mentioned in this earlier post (just click !).****

Here's to hoping....

:)

I hope you have an awesome day. I welcome your comments, suggestions, critiques, and more.

  2. By the way, what are you doing for grad school? I'm so jealous you're almost done - I have a year left, ugh!

  3. Good morning JTS! I'd be most flattered if you added my blog to your roll. May I do the same (when I eventually get around to updating, hehe) ? To answer your question, I'm getting a Masters in Business Admin, so it's been a 2yr program that I started the fall after I graduated from undergrad. How about you?

  4. I am also getting my MBA - how cool! I'm going part-time though. I started last January (2008) and will be done in Spring 2010 - I cannot wait!! What're you going to do after you graduate?

And yes, please add me :) I hear you on updating, sometimes it is so difficult!

  5. Hi, I tried emailing you but it didn't go through. I saw on the JCA Exchange you are looking for the fan mini skirt. I have the eyelet mini. Email me if you are interested. enstowe@hotmail.com

  6. JTS,
So cool that we are doing the same master's degree! I'm really excited to graduate and start working as a pharmaceutical sales rep. I'm completely over being a full-time student and I feel ready to move on with life!

  7. I really love these dresses on you! I have been eying the melody dress for a while now and am grateful to see it on a real life model :) How does the material feel? it looks kind of linen-y from the pics...or is it more flowy?

And congrats on almost being through with grad school! I'm also getting my masters (in Reading ed.) and will be finished in December :)

  8. I'm also a grad student (one month to go!) in love with this dress. Just wanted to thank you for posting a review and pics of this dress...I may be ordering one now for sure. I just can't decide on which color...

  9. Just stopped by my local J Crew store this morning after seeing the dress went on sale online... while the store didn't have it, they ordered it over the phone for me, so I got my 15% student discount and free shipping! I went with the Light Pewter color, I hope I like mine as much as you like yours!

  10. My dress came on Monday... I love the color and the fabric, but unfortunately I don't think it fits. I ordered the size I usually get for dresses, and I feel like the dress is long between the shoulders and the band at the waist. I'm afraid if I exchange for a petite it will be too short. I'm bummed...

  11. AppGal,
Thanks for the compliment! The dress is fully lined with an acetate lining, so it feels silky smooth against the skin. The outside has a rougher, sturdier texture that holds the structure of the dress well and has a lovely finish. I handwashed my lavender one with Dr. Bronner's miracle soap (peppermint) then steamed it and it came out beautifully! Yay for for finishing school! Not too much longer for you...

  12. Mollywaffles,
I'm also bummed you didn't like the dress on you. It is so structured that if it doesn't fit correctly, there's not much that can be done, esp at the shoulders. A tailor could take in the waist, though, if you think that might help. What other dresses do you have from J Crew that suit you really well? And I'm so excited for you to finish school! My last day was this past tuesday and i'm just ELATED!
